This Bastille Day, experience one of the defining works of modern French cinema as Mathieu Kassovitz's LA HAINE returns to Australian cinemas in a stunning new 4K restoration.

Premiering at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, LA HAINE announced itself as an instant landmark, earning Kassovitz the Best Director prize and going on to attract more than two million admissions in France. Thirty years later, its exploration of inequality, identity and social unrest remains as urgent and relevant as ever.

Inspired by real events, LA HAINE follows 24 hours in the lives of three young friends - Vinz (Vincent Cassel), Hubert (Hubert Koundé) and Saïd (Saïd Taghmaoui) - in the aftermath of a violent confrontation between police and residents in the Parisian banlieues. Shot in striking black and white by acclaimed cinematographer Pierre Aïm, the film's bold visual style and unforgettable performances have secured its place as one of the most influential French films of the past three decades.

The film's impact extended well beyond the cinema. Following its release, then French Prime Minister Alain Juppé organised a special screening for members of the French cabinet, recognising the film's powerful portrayal of contemporary social tensions and the conversations it had sparked across the country.

Now meticulously restored in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative under the supervision of Pierre Aïm, audiences can experience LA HAINE with remarkable clarity while preserving the raw energy and visual intensity that made it a modern classic.
