Shame About the Rating

: : Latest News

24 November 2011

Steve McQueen’s highly acclaimed Shame, starring the very talented Michael Fassbender has received an R18+ rating from the Australian Classification Board.

Fassbender was surprised and disappointed when the film received a similar rating of NC-17 in the U.S. Speaking to The Huffington Post, Fassbender said “Most of us have sex, so I don’t understand what we’re trying to sweep under the carpet or repress” he says.

“It’s a serious film that deserves to be treated as such. Half of us have a penis and the other half have probably seen one, and so why should it be more normal to, like, chop people’s heads off and shoot people? Does that mean that that’s more acceptable or closer to us as human beings?,” said Fassbender in the Huffington Post interview.

Fox Searchlight in the U.S has released a new SHAME trailer that will only be available in Australia via the internet. Check out the new trailer here.

Shame will be in Australian cinemas 9 February 2012 and New Zealand 23 February 2012.

The Orator Submitted as First New Zealand Foreign Language Film For Oscars

: : Latest News

30 September 2011

We’re thrilled to hear it was recently announced that The Orator (O Le Tulafale) has been submitted as the New Zealand selection for Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards. The film, written and directed by debut feature filmmaker Tusi Tamasese, tells the story of Saili, a man who is small in stature and humble, living a simple life with his family. When Saili is forced to protect his land, and his family, he must face his fears and find his voice to speak up to those he loves.

This is not the first honour The Orator has been awarded, however, at its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival it received a Special Mention from the Orizzonti Jury, the Art Cinema Award from the CICAE Jury of the Festival; and the CinemAvvenire Best Film – Il cerchio non è rotondo Award from the Jury of the Associazione Centro Internazionale CinemAvvenire. It is, however, a very historical moment – as it is the first time New Zealand has submitted a film for consideration for the Foreign Language Film category. It is also the first major Samoan language feature film to be released!

Make sure to check out this review from Variety’s Leslie Felperin, who described The Orator as “a compelling drama… that marks an auspicious feature debut for writer-helmer Tusi Tamasese.”

The Orator joins many fantastic international titles, including Mexico’s own Miss Bala. Stay tuned for more news on these titles and more!

Miss Bala Chosen as Mexico's Foreign-Language Oscar Submission

: : Latest News

23 September 2011

The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed Mexico has picked its foreign-language selection for the 84th Academy Awards andit’s none other than Miss Bala! While most beauty pageant contestants dream of world peace, Miss Bala tells the story of beautiful, young Laura who dreams of being crowned Miss Mexico, yet involuntarily gets caught-up in the middle of a drug war in California. Luckily for writer and director Gerardo Naranjo, Miss Bala may get her dream by representing Mexico at the Oscars.

Eight other Mexican features have received nominations in the category since 1957, but so far none have won. Naranjo hopes to break that trend by bringing home the honor, and we think he might just do it! Miss Bala has screened at festivals like Cannes, Toronto, Tokyo and San Sebastian, and you can check out a review of the film from Cannes HERE. Stay tuned for upcoming news on Miss Bala and other festival films to be released in the upcoming months!

Skin Makes Spanish Academy Shortlist

: : Latest News

19 September 2011

“Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In has made the Spanish Academy’s three-film shortlist for its foreign-language Oscar contender. Skin faces off with Agusti Villaronga’s Black Bread and Benito Zambrano’s The Sleeping Voice.

In a statement after the shortlist was known, Almodovar said that the selection “demonstrated Spanish cinema’s variety,” and that the Spanish Academy’s final choice of its foreign-language Oscar contender was “absolutely unpredictable.”

Certainly, Skin‘s selection is no shoo-in. Only one of Almodovar’s last four films, Volver, has been chosen by the Spanish Academy as Spain’s foreign-language Oscar candidate, although Almodovar won a U.S. Academy Award for one of the films rejected by the Spanish Academy in the foreign-language category: Original Screenplay for Talk to Her.”

See-Saw And Transmission At It Again

: : Latest News

5 September 2011

We are so proud and excited that our latest collaboration with See-Saw Films, Steve McQueen’s Shame, has been selected for the Venice, San Sebastian, Toronto and New York Film Festivals! The film is produced by See-Saw’s Iain Canning and Emile Sherman who recently won the Oscar for Best Film with The King’s Speech.

Transmission Joint-Managing Director Richard Payten says: “Shame is a brilliant film and one that Transmission is exceptionally proud to distribute. Emile and Iain have an incredible track record for identifying commanding, provocative, thoughtful scripts and outstanding creative teams. Shame is no exception. Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan are electrifying!” We can’t wait to share Shame with Australia and New Zealand in early 2012. Starring two of the industry’s hottest actors, Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, the film had its world premiere In Competition at this week’s Venice Film Festival and the rave reviews keep coming.

Emile (and of course Iain) is equally as thrilled to see the film embraced by so many festivals, “Steve McQueen’s first feature film, Hunger, was a stunning directorial debut and we are taking the film to so many prestigious festivals over the coming months. The film is a powerful exploration of the sexualisation of contemporary society and the challenges of connecting with those close to us.”

Shame follows Brandon, a 30-something man living comfortably in New York balancing a busy job and active social life. When the wayward Sissy turns up at his apartment unannounced, Brandon’s carefully managed lifestyle spirals out of control. It is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.
