The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed Mexico has picked its foreign-language selection for the 84th Academy Awards andit’s none other than Miss Bala! While most beauty pageant contestants dream of world peace, Miss Bala tells the story of beautiful, young Laura who dreams of being crowned Miss Mexico, yet involuntarily gets caught-up in the middle of a drug war in California. Luckily for writer and director Gerardo Naranjo, Miss Bala may get her dream by representing Mexico at the Oscars.

Eight other Mexican features have received nominations in the category since 1957, but so far none have won. Naranjo hopes to break that trend by bringing home the honor, and we think he might just do it! Miss Bala has screened at festivals like Cannes, Toronto, Tokyo and San Sebastian, and you can check out a review of the film from Cannes HERE. Stay tuned for upcoming news on Miss Bala and other festival films to be released in the upcoming months!
